Adaptive clothing sizing guide

Finding the perfect fit for your adaptive clothing should be effortless. At Vilbers.com, we understand the unique needs of our customers, especially those seeking comfortable and functional wheelchair adaptive trousers and other adaptive clothing. This guide will help you confidently select the right size, whether you're a paraplegic or quadriplegic individual, or simply looking for inclusive fashion.

How to choose your pants by body measurements

We've designed our sizing charts around body measurements to ensure the best possible fit for our adaptive trousers. To find your ideal size, you'll need to measure your:

  1. Waist: Measure around your natural waistline, typically the narrowest part of your torso.
  2. Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips, keeping the measuring tape parallel to the floor.
  3. Thighs: Measure around the fullest part of one thigh.

Important note on waist adjustment: Our adaptive trousers feature an adjustable waist. This means that if the size fits your hips and thighs comfortably, the waist measurement can fluctuate by approximately 20% and still provide a great fit.

Measuring from a seated or lying position

We know that standing to take measurements isn't always possible. You can comfortably and accurately measure yourself while lying down or sitting in your wheelchair. Just follow these simple steps:

  • For Waist: If you're seated, lean slightly to the side to expose your natural waistline. If lying down, simply locate your natural waist. Measure around this area.
  • For Hips: While seated or lying down, ensure the tape measure goes around the fullest part of your hips and bottom. Try to keep the tape measure as level as possible.
  • For Thighs: While seated or lying down, measure around the fullest part of one thigh. Make sure the leg is relaxed.

Don't have a measuring tape? No problem!

You can still accurately measure yourself using a simple household item:

  1. Grab a ribbon, rope, or even a piece of string.
  2. Wrap it comfortably around the area you need to measure (waist, hips, or thigh) while seated or lying down.
  3. Mark the point where the ribbon overlaps.
  4. Lay the ribbon flat and measure its length with a standard ruler.

Measure your favorite garment for a perfect match

For an even more precise fit, you can compare the measurements of your favorite well-fitting pants or shirt to the measurements of our garments. We provide detailed garment measurements for all our items. Simply:

  1. Lay your favorite item flat on a bed or flat surface.
  2. Measure the relevant dimensions (e.g., inseam, waist width, hip width for pants; chest width, sleeve length for shirts).
  3. Compare these measurements to the "Garment Measurements" provided on our product pages.

Most trousers are designed for people who stand up. These are not.

The Vilber's Men's Wheelchair Softshell Trousers are built around the seated position from the ground up: the cut, the closures, the pocket placement, the waistband construction, and every seam decision reflects how a wheelchair user actually sits, moves, and lives. The result is a pair of trousers that fit correctly when seated, stay in place throughout the day, and look like a well-made pair of technical outdoor trousers.

Material

The fabric is a 3-ply softshell with a water resistance rating of 8,000 mm. The three layers - outer shell, membrane and inner fleece - are bonded together into a single unified material rather than sewn as separate layers, which gives the fabric its clean feel and structural stability. The outer surface repels water and is easy to wipe clean. The inner surface has a soft fleece texture that is comfortable directly against the skin and warm enough for cool outdoor conditions. The fabric contains 4% elastane, giving it enough stretch to move with the body without losing its shape. It is breathable and does not feel stiff or clinical. Composition: 96% polyester, 4% elastane.

Cut and fit

The trousers are cut in a 3D seated pattern, which means the proportions are calculated for a person who is sitting rather than standing. The back rises higher to keep the lower back covered at all times. The knee area is cut wider to accommodate the natural position of the legs when seated. The lower leg has additional volume to allow space for a leg-worn catheter bag holder, the kind that attaches around the leg with an elastic strap.

There is no central back seam. In standard trousers, sitting on a seam for extended periods causes discomfort and increases the risk of pressure sores. Removing it entirely is one of the most important things a wheelchair-specific garment can do, and it is a core part of how Vilber's trousers are constructed.

The waistband and the back panel are cut from a single continuous piece of fabric. This eliminates the weak point where a waistband typically separates from the trousers - a point that can fail under the lateral forces involved in assisted transfers. While this construction significantly reduces that risk, it should be noted that clothing should never be used as a transfer aid. Always use appropriate patient handling equipment when assisting with transfers.

Pocket

There is one inseam pocket on the right leg with a full internal pocket bag large enough for a phone, keys or other everyday items. It is positioned and sized for easy one-handed access while seated.

Closures and access

The trousers are designed to be put on and adjusted with limited hand and finger mobility. Every zip slider has a finger loop attached, so zips can be operated by hooking a finger rather than pinching, useful for anyone with reduced grip or dexterity. All closure points also have belt loop-style pulls positioned next to them, so the panels can be opened independently without needing to grip a small zip pull or button.

The front panel opens fully and wide via zips, giving complete access for dressing or personal care. The side closures are Velcro, holding the front panel in place on each side. The central waist closure uses a metal trouser hook with a neoprene bumper behind it, so no metal comes into contact with the skin.

Both side zips are two-way, meaning they can be opened from the bottom as well as the top. This allows catheter tubing to be routed out through the lower side opening if needed, in addition to the dedicated zip access at the inner lower leg seam. The inner lower leg zip provides direct access to the area where a leg-worn catheter bag sits, without needing to remove or fully open the trousers.

Design

Every functional detail in these trousers has been considered from an engineering standpoint, but the visual result is intentional: these look like a pair of well-designed technical outdoor trousers. The adaptive features are integrated rather than visible. There are no obvious medical references in the appearance. Wheelchair users deserve clothing that reflects their style, not their diagnosis.

Sizes

Available in XXS to 7XL.

Care

Machine wash at 30°C inside out. Do not use fabric softener — it damages the membrane and reduces water resistance over time. Do not tumble dry. Do not iron.

The trousers are shown on our articulated wooden display mannequin, which is 180 cm tall with size M proportions and fully poseable at all joints. This allows us to demonstrate the seated fit and functional details as accurately as possible.

Excellent seamstress work and very sturdy fastening. I totally recommend this shop!
